Soft tissue sarcoma is an uncommon disease with a historically ominous prognosis, but there has been a great deal of progress in the last two decades in the understanding of these diseases, and accurate prognostic and therapeutic information is now available that removes much of the mystique.

The first transcontinental railroad in the USA was completed in 1869. In the following years, until the turn of the twentieth century, many more railroads were built by different companies. Passenger trains declined from the 1950s and today there is only a minimal long-distance passenger service operated by Amtrak, leaving the railroads to concentrate on moving freight. From the 1970s until the 1990s many railroads merged to give the two main railroads there are in the west today: Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific. As well as the two mega railroads, there are many regional and shortline railroads to add diversity. Locomotives in the USA today are mainly built by General Electric and Electro Motive Diesel. Modern diesels for long-distance mainline freight trains are up to 4,400 hp with six axles. These long-distance trains can weigh up to 20,000 tonnes and often have multiple locomotives that can be at the front, middle and rear. There are also many older diesels for local work, some dating from the 1950s. This book features a selection of photos of mainline and branch-line trains with a wide selection of different locomotives and paint schemes across the western states.

The West Coast Main Line is the principal main line linking London to the West Midlands, the North West and Scotland. The majority of rail freight on the line is container traffic. Some of this traffic is marine containers from the southern ports of Southampton, Felixstowe and the recently opened London Gateway to the North West and Scotland. In addition there are domestic containers from Daventry to Scotland. The route also sees other traffic on various sections including cars, cement, china clay, coal, limestone, nuclear flasks, oil, steel and timber, as well as Royal Mail trains linking London, Warrington and Glasgow. On the route there are freight yards at Wembley, Crewe, Warrington, Carlisle and Mossend. The route includes the well-known climbs up to Shap Summit in Cumbria and Beattock Summit in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. On this electrified route freight is hauled by a mixture of diesel and electric locomotives from all the main rail freight operators in Britain. Electric locomotives include Class 86s from the 1960s as well as more modern Class 90s and 92s, through to the recently built Class 88s. Diesels locomotives are mainly Class 66s although some older British Rail-era diesels still operate on certain workings.

This is the first book-length study to analyse and problematize the notion of literary texts as 'sites of memory' with regard to the representation of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62), and memories of it, in the work of French authors of Algerian origin. The book considers a primary corpus spanning over forty literary texts published between 1981 and 2012, analysing the extent to which texts are able to collect diverse and apparently competing memories, and in the process present the heterogeneous nature of memories of the Algerian War. By setting up the notion of literary texts as 'sites of memory', where the potentially explosive but also consensual encounter between former colonizer and colonized subject takes place, the book contributes to ongoing debates surrounding the contested place of narratives of empire in French collective memory, and the ambiguous place of immigrants from the former colonies and their children in dominant definitions of French identity.
